Charles Clifford (1819-1863) was one of the great masters of 19th-century photography in Spain. Arriving from Great Britain, he found a public in Madrid fascinated by his innovations. Queen Isabel II became his great patron, commissioning official travel albums that opened the door for him to photograph monuments, public works such as the Isabel II Canal, and majestic landscapes. His camera also captured popular life and the colorful characters that gave soul to each city, creating a unique testament to 19th-century Spain.
