Settled in Seville, starting in 1831 he undertook a series of trips throughout the country, becoming interested in its customs, its culture and savoring the rough gastronomy that prevailed in the 19th century. Few foreign travelers have described the Spanish reality with such precision, acuity and knowledge. His books Manual for travelers through Spain and readers at home (1841) and Things from Spain (1846), where he focuses on the food and wines of his host country, are authentic delights for the most demanding palates in gastronomic literature.
