Whether you already own a mohair blanket or scarf, or you're thinking of buying one, here's everything you need to know to make it last for years: What exactly is mohair? Can it be washed? How do you clean it? Will it get damaged if it gets wet?

In this article, we'll tell you how to properly care for mohair, how to clean a blanket or scarf without damaging it, and what to do to make it last for years.

Because yes, mohair is a fiber for life. But you have to understand it.

What is mohair and why does it need special care?

Mohair is the hair of the Angora goat. It is a natural fiber highly prized for three things: its luster, its softness, and its lightness.

Unlike other wools, mohair has a hollow structure. This means that when it is woven, small air pockets are created within the fabric. And air is the best thermal insulator there is. That's why it's so warm without being heavy.

But precisely because it contains air inside, it does not react well to water.

In addition, mohair cannot be woven alone. It is blended with wool (usually merino) and a small percentage of polyamide to give it structure and strength. Our blankets and scarves have the minimum necessary blend percentage, and this varies according to the design.

Can mohair be washed?

It can be cleaned, but always dry. It is important to know that it should not be washed with water.

When mohair gets wet, the fibers become matted and lose volume. That's why it shouldn't be washed in a machine or by hand.

It can be lightly sprayed with a mister to refresh the fiber, but very importantly, always without getting it wet and letting it air dry, flat and without manipulating it.

How to clean a mohair blanket or scarf

Caring for mohair is much simpler than it seems. It doesn't require special products or complicated rituals.

1. Use a natural bristle brush

You need a firm brush, preferably with natural bristles (e.g., horsehair).

Many people already have one at home and it works perfectly; if not, you can get the Real Fábrica White Horsehair Brush for clothes, blankets and scarves. The important thing is that it is not metal-pronged or too aggressive.

2. Find the “right direction”

When you start brushing the blanket or scarf, you'll notice something curious: mohair has a direction in which it looks tidier, and another in which, when brushed, it looks even more disheveled.

Always brush it in the right direction.

3. Why brush mohair?

Brushing serves two essential functions:

  • Dry cleaning: dust and small particles are removed.
  • Restores natural luster: by aligning the fibers, the garment looks fluffy and radiant again.

Mohair naturally shines. But if it's never brushed, that shine can fade.

That's why we recommend doing it when you notice it looking duller or before storing it at the end of winter.

Common mistakes when caring for mohair

Here are some mistakes to avoid:

  • Getting it wet, even a little.
  • Putting it in the washing machine.
  • Washing it by hand as if it were normal wool.
  • Rubbing it with soap and water.
  • Drying it hanging when it's wet.
  • Storing it damp.

If you want to keep your mohair in perfect condition for many years, the most important thing is not to get it wet.

How to store mohair blankets and scarves

When it's time to change your wardrobe, we recommend:

  1. Brushing it thoroughly.
  2. Storing it clean and completely dry.
  3. Avoiding airtight bags if there is humidity.

If you store it brushed and in good condition, it will be perfect when the cold weather returns. It's a small gesture that significantly extends its lifespan.

How long does a mohair blanket last?

Mohair is known to last “a lifetime.” Not because it's indestructible, but because it ages very well if properly maintained.

  • It only needs dry cleaning by brushing.
  • It doesn't deform easily as long as it doesn't get wet.
  • It doesn't lose its thermal capacity with use.

With simple maintenance —occasional brushing and proper storage— it can accompany you for years.

Frequently asked questions about mohair care (FAQ)

Can mohair be machine washed?

No. Mohair should not be machine washed. Water and agitation mat the fibers and reduce their volume.

Can mohair be hand washed?

No, not even a gentle wash. Contact with water affects its structure and causes it to lose its fluffiness.

Can mohair get wet?

It should not get wet. You can lightly spray it with water to refresh the fiber. Always without getting it soaking wet and allowing it to air dry, flat.

How do you clean a mohair blanket if it gets stained?

If it's a spot stain, it's best to take it to a professional dry cleaner. For regular maintenance, dry brushing is sufficient.

How often should mohair be brushed?

There's no exact frequency. You can do it when you notice it looking duller or before storing it at the end of winter.

Is mohair itchy?

Quality mohair is soft and light. When blended with merino wool and properly processed, it is very pleasant to the touch.

Does it lose its luster over time?

It may lose some luminosity if it is never brushed. But by realigning the fibers, it regains its original appearance.
