At Real Fábrica, we work with espadrilles made the traditional way: with natural materials, simple processes, and a lot of craftsmanship behind them.

Espadrilles are traditional Spanish footwear made with:

• a braided jute or esparto sole
• a rubber base for added durability
• a fabric upper (usually cotton or canvas)

They originated as work shoes due to their lightness, low cost, and comfort.

In short: an espadrille is a lightweight, breathable, and flexible shoe, designed for everyday wear.

The first documented espadrilles appeared in the 13th century in areas such as La Rioja, Catalonia, and the Basque Country.

For centuries, they were the footwear of peasants and artisans.

And not for aesthetics, but for logic:

Over time, their simplicity caught the attention of designers and artists, who brought them into other contexts. But essentially, they haven't changed.

The espadrilles we offer are manufactured in Logroño, in workshops that have been dedicated to this craft for decades.

What are espadrilles?

They are traditional footwear with a jute or esparto sole and a fabric upper, very light and breathable.

Are they comfortable for walking?

Yes. They are flexible, lightweight, and adapt well to the foot, making them ideal for everyday use.

Can they get wet?

It is not recommended. Jute is a natural fiber that can deteriorate with moisture.

How do I choose the size?

They fit quite standardly. If you are between two sizes, it is usually best to choose the larger one.

Are they only for summer?

Mainly yes, although in mild climates they can be worn for more months.

What is the difference between espadrilles and Ibizan sandals?

Espadrilles are more closed-toe. Ibizan sandals are more open and have straps.
