“With you, bread and onions”: the love of simplicity

The origin of an expression that says it all

"With you, bread and onions" is one of those phrases that has become etched in our collective memory. Our grandmothers, our mothers, and surely we too, used to say it when we wanted to express that love that requires no frills or artifice. It is believed to originate from old folk songs that spoke of couples who promised each other eternal love, and that even if they only had a crust of bread and an onion to eat, they would stay together. It's the clearest way to say: I love you even if we have nothing, because what we have is already enough.

Simplicity as a way of life

And there's something very powerful in simplicity. In returning to the basics. In an outdoor snack with good bread, in a hearty stew, in an afternoon of sunflower seeds in the park with friends, or in a steaming cup of coffee served in a pretty mug. Things that cost almost nothing and yet fill everything.

Today, in a world that seems to always push us to consume more, to have everything faster, to defend simplicity is almost an act of rebellion. Because it's not about giving up, but about consciously choosing. It's about finding pleasure again in everyday life: in a pretty tablecloth , in a ceramic dish for serving gazpacho, in that serrated knife that slices bread like the one in my mother's house did.

Memories that teach us to live with less

If we think about the trips of our childhood, how many people would fit into a car with their luggage on their backs! Grandparents, aunts, cousins, neighbors from the fifth floor... and we all fit. Today, cars are bigger, and yet, it seems like we don't have enough space. Because everything is more complicated, more crowded. And I don't know when we started needing so many things to do the same thing: rest, share, enjoy.

It's not a question of nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. It's that you don't need to have everything to have everything. True wealth lies in what you can't buy: a long conversation, a simple meal, a shared laugh...

Slow life as a choice

At Real Fábrica, we believe in that. In a life lived without rushing, with more attention to detail and more gratitude for the small things. We believe in handmade products, and above all, products that last! We believe in lifelong know-how, in things that never go out of style because they've never been in fashion. And not for aesthetic reasons, but because we believe that what's authentic, what truly lasts, is always simple.

Bread, onion... and something else

In our shop, we have wicker baskets , artisan knives , rope bread baskets, and books that talk about bread as if it were an edible sculpture. Not because we want to romanticize everything, but because we know that in that act of cutting a slice, of preparing a snack with whatever we have, lies a love for simplicity.

So yes, with you, bread and onions. And an afternoon in the sun. And some sunflower seeds. And everything that doesn't fit in a shopping cart, but does fit in a grateful heart.

What doesn't cost money and is worth a lot

Perhaps it's good to remember, from time to time, that it doesn't take so much. That happiness lies in a walk in the countryside, in a book read leisurely, in the sound of a spoon stirring coffee. That we don't need to fill our days with objects, but with moments.

And in the end, what we remember most isn't what we bought, but what we experienced. That, for us, is true luxury. Living beautifully. Living simply. Living with bread and onions, but with lots of love.
