The Montehermoso cap is a women's cap handmade in the town of Montehermoso. It is the main symbol of the typical costume of this town and one of the main ones in Extremadura. These typical caps are still hand-woven in the town by the only recognized artisan who continues this work, being the 4th generation of her family to continue this beautiful tradition.

They are decorated with colored wool, mother-of-pearl buttons, colored felt and sequins.

There are three types of cap:

  • Maiden's cap is the cap that was formerly worn by young, single women until it became damaged once they were married, although they did not necessarily have to get married to use it. It has more decorations than the other caps and a mirror in the center.
  • A married cap, with fewer decorations than a maiden cap and without a mirror, is what women used after their maiden cap.
  • Widow's cap, in black, worn by women to mourn. It used to be used by elderly women regardless of whether they were widows or not.
